With Preacher being one of our best selling graphic novels, we like to keep you up-to-date on all things Preacher. Some of you remember that HBO purchased the rights to produce Preacher as a TV series. That would have been the best but, after years of development, HBO decided it would be too violent. We were ready to give up but today there is something new. Sony Pictures and Original Films have landed the film rights to Preacher and have chosen Sam Mendes (”Jarhead,” “Revolutionary Road”) to direct. So far that is all we know! We’re bummed since Preacher is doing to be tough to fit into a movie. We’ll keep you updated.

Our favorite name in special effects has always been and will always be the great Stan Winston! You might not know who he is but you know his work. Winston won visual effects Oscars for 1986’s Aliens, 1992’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day and 1993’s Jurassic Park and was nominated for his work on Heartbeeps, Predator, Edward Scissorhands, Batman Returns, The Lost World: Jurassic Park and A.I. From Mr. Roboto to Pumpkinhead to Iron Man, he always raised the bar for creativity and quality.
We’ll miss you Stan! You were a true inspiration!

Hulk might be our favorite of the Marvel characters. Frankenstein meets Jekyll and Hyde? How awesome is that? With that said, we weren’t very excited to see the Incredible Hulk. Maybe it was because of the negative buzz left after the last movie, the talk of Edward Norton fighting with the studio over the final cut, or the director being the guy that did classics like Transporter and Transporter 2. With all that said, the Hulk was pretty damned good!! It works really well right along side of Iron Man and only suffered by comparison because of the amazing acting chops and witty script in Iron Man. However, Hulk easily overtook Iron Man in action, action and more action! In a way, that was also its only flaw. You can tell there was more to this movie but much of the character moments were left behind to make way for scenes that set up the big action. The studio is already saying that the Bluray release of Hulk will have over 70 minutes of extra footage! That is a sign that they lost some of their direction. Regardless, you have to really look for those flaws when watching the film. It is a MUST SEE for the summer. How can you not want to watch Hulk on the big screen? 7.8 out of 10 for the Hulk!
Some small fanboy rambling spoilers - One of the best things about the Hulk was the way it sets up the direction of the Avengers franchise. Our favorite Marvel team book is Mark Millar’s Ultimates and this movie is very much Ultimate Hulk. Not only do they establish that Banner was unknowingly working on the Captain America super serum, they also bring up Cap a few times. Both the Hulk and the Abomination are essentially a botched Captain America which is a much preferred origin. Also, Starks appearance in the movie is identical to Nick Fury’s roll in the Iron Man movie. Add to this that both the Cap and Thor movies are going to be period pieces and you have the perfect set-up for The Ultimates movie. Remember, the first issue of Ultimates is just a Captain America WWII story! If Marvel pulls that off, it will be an amazing event as we’ll have four movies that stand on their own but also act as “issues” in a big story arch. Very nice.

We’re not big on offering up reviews but what the hell! Iron Man is out this weekend and we saw it! What did we think? As fans of all things mech related - the movie was beautiful. Special Effects master Stan Winston is a favorite of ours and he didn’t disappoint with the Iron Man suit. As fans of the Iron Man comic - the movie was the tops! It was easily one of the best superhero films, especially of the origin variety. Robert Downey Jr. was Tony Stark. His Tony scenes carried the movie more than the Iron Man action. The pacing was tight, the dialogue was witty, the casting all around was flawless. If complaints must be made it is in two categories. One, the movie was visually shot in a very straight forward way. Those who are geeks for such things will not find the same visual appreciation that directors like Sam Raimi or Bryan Singer offer in terms of the composition of the camera. Second, (minor spoilers) there was a scene in the film where Iron Man takes on a small group of baddies. This scene was quick intense tactical action that really showcased Iron Man and his abilities. This sequence was so well done in action and visuals that the climactic battle in the film paled by comparison. Okay, we’ll stop babbling about the movie now.
Total score - 8.75 out of 10!! .25 deducted for having a final battle less enjoyable than the middle battle and 1 whole point taken off for lack of artistic license on the visuals.
